More than 100 people — including 22 award winners — attended Scholars Unlimited’s annual celebration of outstanding scholars on September 29th at Denver School of the Arts. Scroll down to see fun photos from the event!

Nine students were recipients of the Cynthia Kahn Award. One student was chosen from each of the nine school sites that hosted our 2015 summer learning program. The winners were selected because they consistently demonstrated positive attitudes, an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to help others. They also consistently put forth strong efforts to become better readers.

In addition, 13 students were recipients of the Jessica Pearson Award, which is presented to the student at each school site who made the greatest gains in reading the 2014-15 Scholars After School program.

The awards are named after the co-founders of Scholars Unlimited (formerly Summer Scholars).

Each award winner received a framed certificate, books, and a $50 stipend. In addition to dinner and awards, the evening featured piano performances by five students currently attending the Denver School of the Arts.

  • The Cyndi and Jessica Scholars Awards event is always a family affair.

Colorado Gives Day — Colorado’s annual celebration of philanthropy — brings together thousands of donors who give collectively on one day to make a huge impact in our state. Last year, 43,979 people made financial contributions to 1,677 Colorado non-profit organizations – and together, they contributed nearly $26.3 million!

Colorado Gives Day is powered by coloradogives.org, a year-round website that is focused on increasing philanthropy in Colorado. Thanks to coloradogives.org, you can make an online gift to Scholars Unlimited — and nearly 1,700 other non-profit organizations – 24 hours a day, any day of the year.

Again this year, there will be a $1 million incentive fund for Colorado Gives Day, thanks to FirstBank and the Community first Foundation. Every organization receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day also receives a proportional amount from the incentive fund, which increase the value of every dollar given on that day.

We hope you’ll be a part of Colorado’s annual day of philanthropy – and we hope you’ll include Scholars Unlimited in your giving!

You can even schedule your gift now, to occur on December 8th, in order to leverage the incentive fund. Just head to the Summer Scholars giving page, located here:

https://www.coloradogives.org/scholarsunlimited/overview

Then, click on the “Donate Now” button … enter your gift amount … click the “CO Gives Day” button … and check out. Your gift will be processed on Colorado Gives Day, and boosted by the incentive fund.

If you have questions or need assistance, please contact Coleen Truax at ctruax@scholarsunlimited.org or 303-381-3746.

And as always, THANK YOU for supporting Scholars Unlimited – on Colorado Gives Day and throughout the year. Your contributions truly make a difference in the lives of the at-risk young learners we serve.

Tax credit reduces the “cost” of your gift

The Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit (CCCCC) is a state tax credit, available to both individual and corporate Colorado taxpayers, which can reduce their Colorado state income tax liability by providing a 50 percent tax credit for cash contributions to qualifying child care providers — including Scholars Unlimited.

The effect of this credit? Half of your donation to Scholars Unlimited is offset by a reduction of your Colorado income taxes – and you are still be able to claim your full contribution as a charitable deduction on your federal and state income tax returns if you itemize deductions. A sample (based upon a 28 percent taxation rate) of the total effect on your taxes is shown below.

As always, consult with your tax advisor to determine how the credit will affect you personally.

Federal Income Tax Bracket 28%
Contribution to Scholars Unlimited $ 1,000.00
Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit (500.00)
Charitable Gift Deduction — Colorado state taxes (46.30)
Charitable Gift Deduction – federal taxes (280.00)
Related federal tax effect* 152.96
Net “cost” of gift to Scholars Unlimited 326.66
Total tax savings of gift to Scholars Unlimited 673.34

* For federal tax purposes, lower state income taxes mean lower state tax deductions.

Colorado Gives Day is an annual celebration of philanthropy that brings together thousands of donors devoted to helping non-profit organizations around the state. Last year, nearly 44,000 people made gifts to 1,500-plus organizations – and total contributions exceeded $26 million!

Colorado Gives Day is powered by the Community First Foundation in partnership with FirstBank. Again this year, FirstBank is providing an incentive fund of $1 million to proportionally increase the value of every donation given. For example, if donations made to Scholars Unlimited on Colorado Gives Day amounted to .025 percent of the total donations given, then we would receive an additional $25,000 from the incentive fund, boosting the amount of every contribution.

If you want to join this collective effort, and increase the value of your donation, you can schedule your gift now to occur on December 8th. Just head to the Scholars Unlimited giving page, located here: https://www.coloradogives.org/scholarsunlimited/overview

Then, click on the “Donate Now” button … enter your gift amount … click the “CO Gives Day” button … and check out. Your gift will be processed on Colorado Gives Day, and boosted by the incentive fund.

Colorado Gives Day a Record-Breaker!

Colorado’s annual day of philanthropy surpassed all previous records when 123,999 donations were made to 1,884 Colorado-based non-profit organizations – and donations totaled $28,416,306, exceeding last year’s total giving by $2.1 million.

Thanks to many generous friends of Scholars Unlimited, our organization also saw an increase, with just under $40,000 contributed to our organization. That total will be boosted by our share of the Colorado Gives Incentive Fund, made possible by First Bank and the Community First Foundation. The $1 million incentive fund will be distributed proportionally to all organizations receiving gifts on Colorado Gives Day.

While December 8th was this year’s official day of philanthropy in Colorado, you can make gifts to Scholars Unlimited via the coloradogives.org website the other 364 days of the year. Just click here: https://www.coloradogives.org/scholarsunlimited/overview

We extend our thanks to everyone who participated in Colorado Gives Day! By supporting your favorite non-profit organizations – including Scholars Unlimited – you have assisted a vital part of our statewide community that makes Colorado a better place to live, work, learn and play and demonstrated the collective impact of philanthropy.

Staff Giving Campaign: 100% Participation

Each year, we invite our staff to make financial contributions to Scholars Unlimited – and we are pleased to report that, once again, 100 percent of our staff members are also donors to Scholars Unlimited!

In addition, each of our 19 permanent staff members was invited to contribute to Mile High United Way’s workplace giving campaign, and nearly all elected to support MHUW, as well. Between payroll deductions, donations made on Colorado Gives Day, and outright gifts, our staff team contributed nearly $5,000 to Scholars Unlimited and United Way.

“I am so grateful to our staff members for their generous support of our scholars,” said Kathleen King, president of Scholars Unlimited. “Day in and day out, each of our staff members give to our organization in so many ways. They contribute their time, their energy, and their passion to help us create brighter futures for at-risk kids in our community. To top it off with generous financial support really demonstrates everyone’s commitment to our mission.”

To celebrate the successful staff giving campaigns, staff members assembled in our conference room on December 17th for food, fun and prize give-aways. A delicious buffet lunch was provided by our friends at Chipotle, and winners of our prize drawing were treated to gift cards and holiday baskets.

There are eight days remaining in 2015 – which means you still have time to make a gift to support our scholars AND to reduce your tax liability for this year.

As charitable donations, gifts to Scholars Unlimited can reduce your federal tax liability if your itemize your federal tax return. Breakfast of Scholars is once again a brilliant success!

More than 300 people gathered at Temple Emanuel for our annual Breakfast of Scholars. This year, our signature fundraising event was a record-breaking success: More than $250,000 was raised to support our out-of-school-time programs for at-risk students, thanks in large measure to the generous individuals who joined our Brighter Futures Circle. Launched at the Breakfast, the Brighter Futures Circle gives donors the opportunity to make a five-year commitment of $1,000 or more per year to sustain and expand the work of Scholars Unlimited.

“We are so grateful to the 15 founding members of our Brighter Futures Circle,” said Kathleen King, president of Scholars Unlimited. “They are demonstrating their deep commitment to helping kids who are considered ‘at-risk’ — but we see as being at promise.”

The event opened with a charming performance by scholars from Swansea Elementary School under the direction of the Colorado Children’s Chorale.

Claudia Medina, who attended Summer Scholars in 2005, provided an inspiring keynote address. Claudia is the first in her family to attend college, and noted that her participation in our summer learning program helped her get there, noting “Scholars Unlimited gives a child purpose and focus beyond school hours, and helps kids reach further than they could imagine.”

Wrapping up the event, Scholars Unlimited board member Malissa Williams talked about her life’s champion – her mother, Mary Sanders – who consistently set high expectations for her achievement in both the classroom and in life. Malissa stressed that “all children deserve the same opportunity to succeed and learn and grow, regardless of background or circumstance. Scholars Unlimited is dedicated to serving kids who need a Mary Sanders in their lives – someone who can help them become healthy, happy, and contributing members of society through the cultivation of their natural gifts and talents.”

The 2016 Breakfast was a truly moving and inspiring even, and we extend a special thank you to all of our donors, sponsors, and supporters who made it possible – we are truly grateful.

Swansea Elementary students receive backpacks filled with school supplies!

Nell Hawley and Mark Fell are successful professionals in the real estate market, and through that success, they have built a large circle of friends and associates. Nell knew she wanted to give back to her community, and asked Mark to join her efforts. The pair hosted a get-together at Las Brisas restaurant – and they asked everyone who attended to bring a child’s backpack and school supplies.

Nell and Mark were overwhelmed by the generosity, and were thrilled to have 70 backpacks filled with school supplies and books to present to our scholars at Swansea Elementary School. In addition to receiving their backpacks during our Scholars After School program, students and their families were treated to an ice cream social. Duirng the festivities, one student commented, “This is so exciting; I never thought I would have my very own school supplies!”

It was moving to see how the kindness and leadership of two compassionate individuals, coupled with the generosity of their friends and business associates, created an experience that was so positive for both donors and scholars.

In fact, Nell appreciated the experience so much that she’s now organizing a book drive so that Swansea’s scholars will have new books to read over the holiday break!

Warm thanks to Nell, Mark and all who contributed! We are extremely appreciative of your goodwill.

Jennie Merrigan Returns as Program Director

$

Jennie Merrigan recently joined our staff team as Program Director — but this isn’t her first stint with Scholars Unlimited. Jennie first joined our organization in 2007 as a Youth Development Instructor, then served as a Site Coordinator at several sites. In 2010, she was promoted to a Program Specialist position, where she worked until leaving us for a Senior Supervisor position with Denver Public Schools’ Department of Extended Learning.

Jennie also is a return Peace Corps volunteer, having served in Vanuatu as a teacher trainer, and she earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with an emphasis in elementary education, from the University of Northern Colorado.

Below, Jennie talks about why she decided to return to Scholars Unlimited — and about her enthusiasm for out-of-school-time programming.

What are your key reasons for coming back to Scholars Unlimited?

I truly enjoyed my work and time at Denver Public Schools. What I was missing at DPS was a mission that speaks to me. Equity in education is very important to me, and Scholars Unlimited’s mission to work with youth that need extra support helps drive me every day. Not only do we offer a safe place to be after school, but we also are providing educational and social-emotional learning opportunities. Our work helps close the opportunity gap. I was ecstatic to see the Program Director position become available, because it offered me an opportunity to continue working in a field that I am passionate about, with a mission that I love.

Why are you passionate about out-of-school programming?

The reason I enjoy the out-of-school-time (OST) field is because we have the opportunity to reach youth in different ways that the traditional school day cannot. With our low student-to- staff ratios, we have the opportunity to provide hands-on learning, to help students with their academic needs thru really targeted assistance, to help kids develop social-emotional assets, and to help youth realize their unlimited potential and be awesome humans in general.

What are your favorite aspects of Scholars Unlimited’s programs?

I love that Scholars Unlimited has embraced project-based learning (PBL) and I am excited to bring my knowledge of PBL to the organization. In my mind, PBL is the perfect complement to out-of-school-time programming, because is enables us to combine our literacy instruction with an infusion of learner-centered academics, critical thinking, and each student’s “voice and choice,” which are vital to OST programs.

Newly Elected Board Members, Officers

Scholars Unlimited is proud to welcome three newly elected board members – Holly Bennett, Sean Choi, and Jonathan Levesque:

Holly Bennett is a long-time Colorado resident who previously served on the Board of Scholars Unlimited from 2008 thru 2014. After a leave, Holly is excited to be re-joining the Board and being part of the organization’s governing body again. Holly is the Deputy Director at the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association.

Sean Choi is a Colorado native who has lived and worked all along the Front Range, from Pueblo to Fort Collins. Sean moved to Denver to pursue his MBA in finance at the University of Colorado–Denver, and is now Assistant Vice President at FirstBank, specializing in commercial real estate lending.

Jonathan Levesque is originally from Littleton, Colorado, and attended the University of Denver where he earned his Masters of Accountancy. He serves as the Accounting Manager for Littleton Public Schools, and lives in Denver with his dog Bronx, who protects the backyard from daily squirrel invasions.

Each of these new Board members was elected to a three-year term at our January Board meeting. Board members may serve two consecutive terms, and then may be re-elected after a one-year hiatus.

In addition to welcoming these new members, the Board also elected a new slate of officers for the coming year:

Lisa O’Connor, who joined the Board in 2014, was elected as Chair. Lisa is the Director of Client Services for Gut Check, an innovative market research firm headquartered in Denver, and holds a Master’s degree in engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder. Lisa served as a bi-lingual fourth-grade teacher in Houston as a member of Teach for America.

Spencer Reedy, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, was elected Vice Chair. Spencer joined the Board in 2015 and was an integral member of the launch team for CodeSpire, our for-profit social enterprise. Spencer grew up in Mississippi and graduated from Mississippi College with a degree in business administration.

Ali Mickelson, Director of Legislative and Tax Policy at the Colorado Fiscal Institute, was elected treasurer. Ali holds a law degree from the University of Denver, and was selected by Governor Hickenlooper’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade to serve as the budget expert on the Enterprise Zone Task Force.

Erica Salmon Byrne was elected secretary – and she has impeccable credentials for the job. After earning a Juris Doctor cum laude from the Georgetown University Law Center, Erica has built her career as a nationally recognized expert in ethics and compliance. She has worked as a practicing attorney, consultant, and adjunct faculty member at the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver.

My North Star

0

Malissa Williams joined the Scholars Unlimited Board in January, 2016, and has been a donor to the organization since 2010. She works as an Assistant Attorney General in the Health Care Unit in the Office of the Colorado Attorney General.

I’ll admit it. I’ve been really distracted since Tuesday, November 8, 2016. Now, especially, it seems like there’s so much noise all of the time – on television, print and radio news, my 12 different social media feeds, on our streets. It seems like it’s all politics, all the time. It’s exhausting.

I suspect that I’m not the only one being pulled in different directions at once.  And especially if you believe in social justice like I do. So many worthy causes. How do you pick the right one – the one that will most positively impact people’s lives and society in general? The one that you can feel good about throwing yourself into?

“All politics is local” – it may be a hackneyed expression, but it is truer today than ever.  When it’s hard to know where to direct your time, attention, and resources, use “all politics is local” as your North Star, and you’ll never lose your way.

It was that guiding principle that led me to what was then known as Summer Scholars.  My good friend and colleague Jon Bender introduced me to the organization by inviting me to the annual fundraiser Breakfast of Scholars.  I left that Breakfast deeply moved by the incredible work of Scholars Unlimited because it tapped directly into my sense of social justice and my desire to act locally.

First of all, the statistics were shocking.  The one that haunts me most is that one-fourth of all Denver Public School (DPS) students live in poverty.  Let that sink in for just a bit. That means a family of four – mom, dad, and two little kids, or a mom and three children – living on an income of $24,600 per year. (See https://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty-guidelines)

When you have an income amounting to just a little over $2,000 per month, where’s the money for after-school tutoring; buying books for the home; summer camp; dance and art lessons; piano class; computers; broadband Internet access? Forget that. Where’s the money for buying healthy food; grandma’s diabetes medication; and paying rent for an apartment or home that’s not blooming with mold?

These students begin school with enormous deficits in social capital and school readiness – and without additional supports, they never catch up. It’s not hard to understand why 68.5% of DPS students receive free/reduced price school lunches.  Or why more than one-third of DPS students fail to graduate high school. (See http://communications.dpsk12.org/facts.html)

The costs to all of us are high: People who don’t get a high school diploma are more likely to earn less, to live in poverty themselves as adults, and to end up in the criminal justice system.  (See http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/by-the-numbers-dropping-out-of-high-school/)

Not only is this cycle of poverty and incarceration morally reprehensible and offensive to the conscience, it’s expensive – there’s the intangible cost of lost productivity and innovation (how much brain power is left untapped or, worse, thrown away?), as well as the very tangible, real costs. Each year, our state spends about three times more to incarcerate one inmate than it spends to educate one student (See http://money.cnn.com/infographic/economy/education-vs-prison-costs/).

Like so much that’s going on in the world right now, these seem like intractable problems that make you want to throw up your hands and say “just forget it.” But, for me, succumbing to cynicism and apathy is the easy way out. I know I can’t fix all of the country’s problems or even a fraction of them, but I also know that I have to do something besides sharing articles, commenting on friends’ posts, and expressing outrage on Facebook. I can help provide equity to some of our community’s most disadvantaged kiddos. And that’s exactly why I got involved with Scholars Unlimited.

Scholars Unlimited is committed to serving underprivileged and at-risk children who attend Denver Public Schools. There’s free after-school programming to help kids who may be struggling academically.  In the summer, Scholars fills in the gap for students whose parents can’t afford camps and enrichment activities.  Instead of losing academic gains achieved during the school year, students build MORE academic skills over the summer and participate in numerous activities that they otherwise would not be able to access.

And guess what? It works.  Last year, our end-of-program assessments showed that:

  • 80 percent of our scholars achieved grade-level proficiency in literacy skills that are critical for reading proficiency.
  • Two-thirds of our students made significant and measureable gains in reading fluency and comprehension.

I’m one person, but if I can channel my energy and outrage and resources to just one thing that makes me feel like I’m making a difference in the community that has given me so much, it’s Scholars Unlimited.  After my first Breakfast of Scholars, I became a sustaining member in the organization.  It was a very, very modest amount that came out of my account each month, but it was consistent and much appreciated by the organization – I loved getting the handwritten notes from both scholars and and staff. But it wasn’t all warm fuzzy feel good stuff. There were also the tax breaks! In addition to the federal tax deduction for charitable donations, gifts to Scholars Unlimited qualify for the Colorado Child Care Contribution Credit – which results in a lower state tax bill.

Now, I am truly thrilled to have upped my participation by serving as a member of the Scholars Unlimited Board. In my first year on the Board, I’ve increased my giving and introduced my friends to the Scholars’ mission by holding a Discovery Tour at my home. And coming full circle, I sponsored a table and had the honor of speaking at last year’s Breakfast of Scholars – something I never would have dreamed of doing when I attended my first Breakfast all those years ago.

But it’s not about me. It’s about providing equity and improving outcomes for children whom some would discard. It’s about the light and joy in the faces of children who are discovering their true potential, believing in themselves for maybe the first time ever, and learning that people do care about what happens to them.

It’s about acting locally by building a more just, inclusive, and moral community – one that gives each kid a fair shot at success, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity or nationality, by giving her the academic, social, and emotional skills to become a fully realized, contributing member of society.

If you’re distraught and feeling overwhelmed by the constant onslaught of news and events in the nation and the world, I urge you to follow my North Star and remember that all politics is local. Consider becoming a sustaining member of Scholars Unlimited.  Attend a Discovery Tour (http://scholarsunlimited.org/get-involved/discovery-tour/), pull up a chair at the Breakfast of Scholars (http://scholarsunlimited.org/category/news/), learn more about our mission, meet our scholars and our incredibly committed and knowledgeable staff.  You’ll come away feeling refreshed, inspired and humbled, just as I do. Believe me.

White House Budget Proposes to Eliminate Funding for Out-of-School-Time Programs

Last month, the White House unveiled its proposed federal budget. If enacted, this budget will eliminate 62 federal programs – including the 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant program.

“This budget proposal is devastating for hundreds of organizations like Scholars Unlimited,” said Kathleen King, President.  “More important, it is devastating for thousands of children and youth who are considered at-risk, and who are able to get a helping hand up thanks to before- and after-school and summer learning programs funded through 21st Century grants.”

According to the Colorado Department of Education (CDE), current 21st Century Community Learning Center grant awards are funding out-of-school-time programs at 102 sites around the state. Last year, more than 19,000 students attended 21st Century-funded programs in Colorado.

“Our 21st Century grant funding amounted to about one-third of our budget for 2016, so it’s a vitally important revenue stream for the disadvantaged kids and families seeking our programs,” said Kathleen.

She continued, “In calling for the elimination of this funding, the White House budget chief said there’s ‘no demonstrable evidence’ that out-of-school time programs are effective at increasing student achievement.

“That is flat wrong. There is ample evidence that afterschool programs help improve students’ grades and test scores, help improve regular school attendance, and help students build positive behaviors that are building blocks for ongoing success.”

Scholars Unlimited’s own data demonstrates that our programs are effective in helping disadvantaged students. By the conclusion of our programs:

  • Three out of four participants achieve grade-level proficiency in fundamental literacy skills;
  • Nearly half achieve grade-level proficiency in reading fluency and comprehension; and
  • Almost all have made gains in social-emotional skills that support greater academic achievement.

As a friend of Scholars Unlimited, we hope you’ll call on Senators Bennett and Gardener and your Congressional representative to preserve 21st Century funding. You’ll find more information, including contact info, here:

Thank you, in advance, for advocating on behalf disadvantaged students!
